The Notre Dame Women’s Liturgical Choir
The Women's Liturgical Choir, the Basilica's only all-female choir, is comprised of 40 women from various academic and faith backgrounds who serve as music ministers at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. As a group, we aim to use our talents to serve others, share a diverse liturgical repertoire, and encourage prayer through music. Beyond our ministry on Notre Dame’s campus, we engage in community outreach at Our Lady of the Road in South Bend, visit Notre Dame Clubs and local parishes nationwide on tours, and collaborate with the Holy Cross Missions around the globe.
The choir draws from a varied repertoire of the highest quality, including Gregorian chant, Renaissance polyphony and music from the 17th Century through the present day. We recognize the importance of new music for the Church and regularly commission pieces and also sponsor an annual composition contest.
The choir is responsible for providing music at the Saturday Vigil Mass at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, including the mass after Notre Dame home football games. In addition, the Women's Liturgical Choir sings at a variety of other Masses and services through the school year, including:
- Opening of the School Year Mass
- Sunday vespers
- Advent Lessons and Carols
- Certain Holy Days of Obligation, and special Masses
- Junior Parents Weekend Mass
- Holy Week Liturgies (Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday)
- Yearly concert
- Baccalaureate Mass
Membership in the Women's Liturgical Choir is open to all female undergraduate and graduate students of the University of Notre Dame, Saint Mary's College and Holy Cross College. Membership is by audition only. General auditions for all university choral ensembles, including the Women's Liturgical Choir, are held at the beginning of the school year. Further auditions are held throughout the rest of the school year. Contact Dr. Patrick Kronner for additional audition information or click here.
